Second Time Around
In 2009, the UAE took a big step in the realm of art by participaing in the Venice Biennial, an event that dates back to 1895 and has established itself as the most important biennial art event in the global arts scene.
Fast forward 2 years later, the UAE Pavilion opens its doors the Seond Time Around to the international community, proudly presenting the works of its 3 Emirati artists in an exhibition that kicked off around the same time as the 54th Biennale di Venezia
did.
The exhibit was developed and presented under the leadership of its Commissioner, Dr. Lamees Hamdan and Curator Vasif Kortun, an internationally respected writer and Director of Research and Programs, SALT, Istanbul.
Kortun, in an interview, describes the approach to the 2011 UAE Pavilion as purposefully modest, saying: “[it] Will not be curated around concepts but around artistic positions, as if three independent projects form a coherent exhibition structure pivoting around the works of three artists, Reem Al Ghaith, Abdullah Al Saadi and Lateefa bint Maktoum.”
The works, an exploration of different mediums, are on display from the 4th of June to the 27th of November this year.
